Hylas und die nymphen ( 1896 ) ist ein ölgemälde der engländer Pre-Raphaelite maler john william waterhouse . als das schiff der argonauten die insel cios erreichte , Hylas , der junge und hübsche begleiter des herkules , wurde auf der suche nach wasser an land geschickt . Er entdeckte einen brunnen , aber die nymphen des ortes waren von seiner schönheit so verzaubert, dass sie ihn in die tiefen ihrer wässrigen unterkunft zogen , und trotz der schreie des herkules, die die ufer mit dem namen hylas nachhallen ließen , der junge mann wurde nie wieder gesehen .
